I like how the writers of this show have worked to sort-of reinvent the show as time has gone on: with Mission Paw episodes (not in Season 8, but probably around Seasons 5-7 or somewhere thereabouts) and Air Patrol and Sea Patrol episodes. I think that Season 8 has a number of Sea Patrol episodes, which are fun. Our daughter's favorites seem to.

PAW PAW, MI - Questions and uncertainty have surrounded Detroit Country Day's football team for the better part of two weeks.

Saturday's game against Paw Paw provided plenty of answers and established the Yellowjackets' place as a state championship frontrunner in Division 4.

The Yellowjackets (3-1) rolled to a 37-17 road win over the Red Wolves (4-1) in a battle of state-ranked teams thanks to a strong performance from a couple of unlikely sources.

Freshman running back Gabe Winowich scored two touchdowns, and his sophomore backfield mate Graham Doman added two more, as the young and talented tandem filled in for senior standout Jacob Yarberry.

'Both have really good pedigrees of guys who are versatile on the field, and we needed them to step up, and they did,' Country Day coach Dan MacLean said. 'Graham Doman has been doing everything for us as a sophomore. He plays linebacker, runs the ball and does an excellent job, and he's our kicker, too, and has done tremendously.

'Gabe Winowich is the younger brother of a former player of ours, and he's got a tremendous future ahead of him, and he demonstrated that he can do the job today.'

Doman also booted a 42-yard field goal, but most importantly, he and Winowich answered the pressing question of who would step in for Yarberry, who was one of a handful of players that didn't make the trip due to being quarantined after a recent COVID-19 exposure.

Perhaps the biggest question heading into Saturday's kickoff was whether the teams would play at all.

Country Day had to forfeit last week's game against Armada due to COVID-19, and the Paw Paw trip wasn't finalized until midweek.

'It was a lot of negotiation, and I really appreciate their administration -- Alan (Farnquist), the athletic director, and Matt (Stephens), the head coach,' MacLean said. 'We were in communication, and we got the result that we needed, I believe it was Tuesday or Wednesday. We kind of made a case with them, and they were great about it. They really wanted to play football, as did we, and we determined the proper quarantining and stuff had taken place, and guys were off the field for us, so they agreed to play, and it's appreciated.

'Both of us wanted the game very badly.'

Country Day and Paw Paw were ranked among the state's best teams in Division 4 for much of the 2019 season, and they entered Saturday's contest at No. 3 and No. 4 in the most recent rankings.

'We were excited for them to come,' Paw Paw coach Matt Stephens said. 'They definitely challenged us and pushed us around a little bit, but I thought it was a good, hard game.'

First-half touchdown runs from Winowich and junior quarterback Brandon Mann, followed by Doman's long field goal with 3 seconds left in the second quarter, gave Country Day a 17-0 lead going into halftime, and the Yellowjackets got another big special teams play midway through the third, when Joe Miller returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a score.

Paw Paw got on the board in the final seconds of the third quarter thanks to a 21-yard touchdown run from Cullen Sylvester, and a school-record 51-yard field goal from junior Jose Valverde cut the deficit to 24-10 and gave the Red Wolves a healthy dose of momentum.

But when Doman countered with a 27-yard touchdown scamper, and Winowich raced 62 yards to the house with 3:53 left in the fourth, the Yellowjackets left little doubt.

One question that has yet to be answered is how good Country Day can be with a little momentum and its full complement of players.

The Yellowjackets had to cancel a Week 1 matchup with L'Anse Creuse North due to a COVID-19 exposure, making Saturday's contest just the third game Country Day has played all season.

From a personnel standpoint, starting cornerback and back-up running back Kaelen Cooper has been unavailable for the first five weeks due to quarantine situations, though MacLean said the senior has yet to test positive for the coronavirus.

Preparing for game day without some of his star players has presented challenges, and but the toughest part is when his active ones aren't even sure they're going to get a chance to play, MacLean said.

'It's tough with the kids because they get their hopes up,' he said. 'Last week was our second time (canceling a game), and it's just hard. Many of these guys on our team are spring athletes playing lacrosse and baseball, and it's just hard. You get your heart set on playing, and I think we have a pretty good group here, and we want to play.

'The first time, we found on a Thursday, and last time was a Friday, but we coach that you're going to have adversity. It's going to happen in every game, as it did today, and you're going to have it in life, so you have to be resourceful and respond appropriately, not react. The kids do a better job than I do oftentimes.

'I just feel badly for them and the opportunities they've lost, but we keep moving and hopefully we can enjoy more games in the playoffs and keep moving forward.

The way things have been going, to get on a bus and go two-and-a-half hours, it's another part of the story, and I think it's something that if they handle it right, they can reflect on as they go through their life and their education going forward.'

Country Day is scheduled to close out its season against Birmingham Brother Rice next week, and playing that game would meet the MHSAA's four-game minimum required to make the postseason.

Meanwhile, Paw Paw has another state-ranked team ahead, this time second-ranked Edwardsburg with a Wolverine Conference championship on the line.

How the Red Wolves respond to the sting of defeat will be vital in determining whether they can wrestle the Wolverine title away from the Eddies.

'The thing is, the first couple games of the season, we hadn't been down; we hadn't been behind,' Stephens said. 'When you have a game like this and get down, it's really a test of character to see how your kids are going to respond. Are they going to fall apart? Are they going to step up and say, ‘We're going to stay together?'

'I think today was a little bit of a learning curve in that area, and there were times when we kind of lost our minds a little bit and had to regroup. It was nice that we came back down in the fourth quarter and scored late because I never felt like we quit, I just felt like we needed to wrap up stuff a little bit mentally.

'We'll get back to it next week when we're going down to Edwardsburg, and that's not going to be any easier, so we're going to have to show up.'
